Qualifications and Experience
Michael Chamberlain is one of the leading independent insolvency practitioners in the UK. He has established a national practice which is well regarded in the world of insolvency, business recovery and turnaround. As a result of operating at the forefront of the insolvency profession’s thinking Michael was instrumental in an important reported case, up to the level of the Court of Appeal. Michael also has expertise in a range of areas from appointing an administrator, to the validity of debentures and also the sale of claims in liquidations.
Michael is a graduate economist from Sheffield University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant during his 5 years with the UK’s largest professional services firm and global giant, PwC (formerly PricewaterhouseCoopers). Post qualification, Michael decided to specialise in insolvency and corporate recovery obtaining his licence as an Insolvency Practitioner during his 6 years working, ultimately as a senior manager, within the Restructuring practice of Ernst & Young another global professional services firm. Also during this time Michael was seconded for an 18 month period to the business support unit of a major clearing bank where he honed his business rescue and turnaround skills from a lender’s perspective.
In 1998, Michael founded Chamberlain & Co, a boutique insolvency and business turnaround practice, to provide big firm experience and leading edge rescue techniques to entrepreneurs in the SME market. The advice provided often covers both business and personal financial distress situations as the two are often interlinked in the SME market.
At that time the rescue culture was only just developing in the UK. Michael was a leading proponent of the use of rescue processes to save businesses and jobs. Michael became one of the main board directors of the Turnaround Management Association upon its establishment in the UK, after been a member of the United States headquartered association and previously attending its annual conference in the USA. The Turnaround Management Association mission is to improve and develop the turnaround industry. Michael was the director responsible for organising its second and third annual conferences in the UK.
As well as supporting the development of the turnaround industry from its earliest days, Michael has also held an elected office within R3 (the umbrella body for Insolvency Practitioners) being a committee member in the Yorkshire Region. As well as dealing with regional affairs R3 had input into proposed legislative changes to the national insolvency framework. Chamberlain & Co have always been enthusiastic adopters of legislation developed to reduce the cost of rescue and insolvency. Chamberlain & Co were one of the earliest firms to utilise web technology and virtual meetings to communicate with creditors once the enabling legislation was introduced.
As a consequence of Michael’s passion for rescue and insolvency, and due to the skill and experience in his team, Chamberlain & Co attracts complex and challenging work from across the country. The well rounded experience that Michael and his team have gained over the years has made Chamberlain & Co the firm of choice for many businesses and individuals suffering financial distress.
